Porcupines - Revisited

I almost hate to bring this up again.  We've been porcupined.  It's our most controversial topic, ever.  Here's a picture of Winnie on Wednesday evening.

I've been clear-cutting the forest for firewood so Amanda and I can stay warm (plus we might put a barn and pasture in the clearing) and apparently I've created porcupine habitat.  Because last night Winnie did it again.  She's persistent, but at least she limits her encounters to a single dose of quills.

There's nothing like having blood all over the floor, and the occasional quill in your underpants (via the laundry cycle) to let you know you are alive.

On Monday night I actually saw two porkies -- with a gun in my hand.  However, it was unloaded for safety reasons, and the shot would have been anything but safe.  Thank goodness I had Dove on a leash.

I have the same issue, Remy was quilled last Tuesday. Could someone please tell me what sort of purpose porcupine's serve? Take spiders, I can understand spiders, I don't really like them but I know they eat some of the bugs that would otherwise chew on me, bats are right up there with them, especially while flyfishing at dusk. Could someone please tell me something beneficial about a porcupine. Besides target practice that is.
