Rabid Puppies sold at a FLEA MARKET
I don't know what's the most troubling aspect of this story.
- That it's legal to sell puppies at flea markets (and the Wilton Sportsman's Show). Here's a tip: Puppies at 8 weeks of age have incomplete resistance to diseases that are deadly to puppies. Exposing the pups to hundreds of people is a bad idea. Buying pups from somebody who doesn't know this or doesn't care is stupid.
- That the breeder somehow got these pups exposed to rabies. Canine transmission of rabies was eliminated in the US last year and I believe it was non-existent in Canada for even longer.
- That mixed breed puppies are worth any money beyond what it costs to spay or neuter them before they leave a reputable facility.
-
That folks who don't have enough money for veterinary care would spend $200 on a puppy rather than adopting one that had been vetted from a reputable organization.
Look, if you can't afford to buy a puppy, you can't afford to own a dog. (It's one of the reasons I'm leery about folks who want to dicker on the price of a pup.) If you do want a dog and don't have much money, get one from a real rescue organization or humane society and spend the money on veterinary care.
