Winnie and Amanda saved a dog's life yesterday
Amanda called yesterday, needed Winnie or Colt to be delivered to the John Deere dealership, NOW.
She had a young bitch who was "trying to die on" her. The bitch had an emergency c-section the day before. Weird story on her. The owner is in South Carolina or something, and intentionally bred her. At six weeks, he decided he couldn't keep her and shipped her back to the breeder.
She was about 20 pounds underweight and pregnant. When she got a pup stuck sideways, they operated. It was a decision with little hope of a positive outcome. If they do nothing, she dies. If they operate, she probably dies on the table. If she makes it off the table, she probably dies the next day.
Well, she made it off the table and the next day she was working on tipping over. Amanda looked at a smear of blood under a microscope and saw no red blood cells. That's when I got the call.
I sent Winnie because she's such a trooper. Apparently she sat quietly through the whole ordeal with no fussing. They could have sedated her, but better otherwise. The sedative lowers the blood pressure and it takes longer to do.
Then Winnie got another needle, fluids to replace the lost ones. She also got some sort of snack with all the goodies that a blood donor dog needs back. I expected her to wear out with the loss of red blood cells, but I couldn't tell anything. Winnie was her "normal" goofy self.
She really did not want to get into Amanda's truck yesterday, and the next time, I'm sure it will be a bit harder.
As for the pups, six made it. The breeder whelped out a litter at the same time as the c-section and his brood matron is nursing 13 puppies. If they remove some to give her a break, she brings them back.
As for Winnie, it's kind of a mixed blessing she did so well giving blood. If she'd screwed it up, Amanda wouldn't have been so proud of her, and Colt would have had to go the next time.
