More on the Menu Foods poison dog food

AH-HA moment.  I speculated that they didn't test the food on animals prior to unleashing the new formula on the general public, but they indeed did.

According to the US Food and Drug Administration, Menu Foods "taste tested" the food on 25 cats, 9 (36%) of which died.  See for your self http://www.fda.gov/bbs/topics/NEWS/2007/NEW01590.html

Amanda and I went to Sullie's in Waterboro which is a little hole in the wall bar with the finest food in at least a 30 mile radius.  Gourmet dining in jeans and sneakers with Irish beers on tap.  The owner knows us already and the chef comes to make sure you like your food.  (I joked that it was bad, having cleaned my plate, and it really hurt his feelings.  Whoops!)

Anyway, it turns out that about 1/3 of the folks there owned GSP's and most used them for hunting.  (There were like a dozen of us in total, including the owner.)  One woman found out about the food recall there, that night from the TV.  She normally fed dry food, but last week she got her dog (not one of the GSP owners) a special treat, a pouch of dog food.  Imagine the shock and fear.  She tried to do something nice for her dog; she may have poisoned it.  The information she got from other patrons on the topic was, well, varied and mostly incorrect (bad memories of conflicting news reports).  What am I to do, start a bar fight to correct the regulars?  Nope.  At least she knows to tell her vet that she fed the stuff if Fluffy comes up ill.

You know, the biggest law suits might not come from pet owners, but the folks who branded this stuff.  Iam's and Eukanuba (Proctor and Gamble) put their labels on it.   Purina (Nestle) did too, but with the Mighty Dog brand, not the flagship.  This may hurt sales of their other dog foods, and it's not like folks need another reason to start making their own dog food.  Although I still think you are safer with commercial; high-grade commercial dry, to be specific.  I can tell you that I look at the industry a bit differently now.
