New Puppy, New Owner

My name is Erik (or Silent Bob) I am a close friend of Todd and I have been the benefactor of Dove's most recent litter of puppies. This is my first experience with my own hunting dog, I have hunted with Todd, his brothers and some of the guys at Todd's bird camp, which I am very excited for this year. I have also been able to attend some of the testing events for the Sebasticook chapter of NAVHDA.  So I am sort of familiar with the various testing scenarios. As you can see I have some experience with Hunting dogs.

Professionally I am a Special Education teacher at a  middle school in Mass. prior to teaching in a middle school teacher I worked with brain injured children, teaching them various skills and most importantly modifying behaviors. I will be using this BLOG to be keep track of various teaching and behavior modification techniques I will be using to train my puppy. I will be referencing either directly or indirectly three books to train Mason, Good Owners, Great Dogs, My Smart Puppy and what training would be complete without the NAVHDA book tittled,  The Training and Care of the Versitale Hunting Dog. The first two books are used to help me to build a relationship with Mason so that he will be obedient for 11 months of the year. The third book will help prepare for the 12th month.

Mason is a 10 week old German Shorthair Pointer(GSP) and has had minimal accidents in the house. He has not had an accident in his crate to this point. Mason is in his crate while I am at work from approximately 7:30 am until about 4:00pm, not a long time to a full size dog but it could be a lifetime to a puppy. He will also inconsistently sit, this command is most consistent when the distractions are minimized. I have also begun to limit his roam of the house during meal time, during meal time his leash is tied to a table where he is not able to physically bother me however he is able to see me, the noise has been minimal thus far.

Also I am not an uptight person who cannot take criticism, to the contrary I welcome your comments and questions. This is an adventure for me and I am very excited to begin...

Erik is a long-time friend and I helped turn him onto hunting. He teaches learning disabled kids and has a lot of experience with brain injured children. I'm looking forward to seeing his behavior modification experience applied to dog training.
