Home inspection - Drama
Amanda’s on my butt for not blogging enough. It’s true; she actually wants more of our personal life on the internet. Ain’t she great? I’ve never been shy about letting it all hang out, but I figured she’d be uncomfortable at some point.
We had our home inspection on Friday for the farm. The place needs work, but I never expected it to be that bad. The wood furnace, which probably got the seller about $10K extra from me, has a hole in the heat exchanger.
The oil furnace would not fire, not enough oil in the tank (we’re told) was the only problem. It has duct work that attaches to NOTHING. One blows towards a hole in the wall that leads to the front closet. Apparently the folks were into warm coats and came up an inch too short. Hello? Perhaps finish the duct work and put a vent into a ROOM.
The wood stove hook-ups were piped with un-insulated flue. You know, the kind that goes through the open air as long as there’s brick. These go through a big wooden closet with ancient newspaper and such; a tinder-box if you will.
The main drain-line in the house is cracked and repaired with duct tape. So the stuff you put in the drains that’s supposed to end up outside in the septic system, well some of that drips into the basement.
I’m not so worried about the mildew and stuff. We knew about most of it and are planning to basically re-do every surface in the place. We will have to keep that basement dry in order to stop the mold.
One of the long-time readers of the web-site, Tom B., is actually from Shapleigh and lives on the same road as the farm. We’re neighbors.
