Diva's PennHIP

Diva's PennHIP scores are in.  She's a .30 in the left and the right couldn't be graded as the hip cavetated (exactly like cracking your knuckle).  The pressure released little gas bubbles in the fluids in the joint.

.30 is exactly the magic number in PennHIP.  Score .30 or better and you have as close to zero lifetime chance of developing HD as one can get.  .30 is the top 70% of the breed and .35 is the median.  Interesting because even at .35, the dog has less than 1% chance of developing HD.

Cavetation happens in about 4% of the dogs.  I'm looking into redoing the test right now, but it's very rare for the hips to be wildly lopsided.  I'd expect that hip to be between .27 and .33, which is within the range that I consider "breedable."

There's long been a discussion that says you should always breed in the top half of the scores, and that will improve the breed over time.  True enough, but lets pretend the top half becomes .25 or better.  There's still no chance of HD at .30 (and only minimal at .35) so what's the point?  You are up against diminishing returns.
