Am I getting into horses?

No way.

Would I get on a fairly stable horse's back for some trail riding or other leisurely activities?

Sure.

I enjoy being around the horses, but mostly because I enjoy being around Amanda.  I can see her attraction to it, but there is no way I'm sinking that much money, time and effort into a horse.  I'll spend it on dogs.  Don't own a fly rod, hunting bow or any other piece of equipment that takes my time away from gun dogs.

Amanda keeping horses is good for me.  She understands my obsession with gun dogs.  She'll go beyond tolerating my "habit," she'll support it.  I want to support her too.  I'm so lucky to have found a girl who is into performance animals rather than pretty much anything else.  (Fill in the blanks for expensive hobbies: antique collecting, gambling, world travel, etc.  I'll take Amanda's vice, thank you.)

If a move down south or out west ever happens (not even thinking about it), maybe I'd keep a field-trial horse.  My friend Jean does a good job with both.  Here's a plug.  http://desertrosekennel.com/  Check out Jean's Diva, a Paint filly out of a bay mare.  She's so cute.  They breed good dogs too, but they come at it from a different philosophy than I do.  More "Americanish" dogs and wider crossing.
